Information and definitions for the Age of Exploration
The Age of Exploration (also called the Age of Discovery) began in the 1400s and continued through the 1600s. It was a period of time when the European nations began exploring the world. They discovered new routes to India, much of the Far East, and the Americas. The Age of Exploration took place at the same time as the Renaissance.
Why explore?
The increase in trade during the Renaissance led to an Age of Exploration. During this era of discovery, European explorers searched for new trade routes to Asia, new people to convert to Christianity, and new lands to conquer in the name of their kings at home. ... These changes led to the “rise” of Western Europe
Outfitting an expedition could be expensive and risky. Many ships never returned. So why did the Europeans want to explore? The simple answer is money. Although, some individual explorers wanted to gain fame or experience adventure, the main purpose of an expedition was to make money.
How did expeditions make money?
Expeditions made money primarily by discovering new trade routes for their nations. When the Ottoman Empire captured Constantinople in 1453, many existing trade routes to India and China were shut down. These trade routes were very valuable as they brought in expensive products such as spices and silk. New expeditions tried to discover oceangoing routes to India and the Far East.
Some expeditions became rich by discovering gold and silver, such as the expeditions of the Spanish to the Americas. They also found new land where colonies could be established and crops such as sugar, cotton, and tobacco could be grown.

Joint Stock Co.: a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders
Capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
Columbian Exchange: also known as the Columbian interchange, named after Christopher Columbus, was the widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the Americas, West Africa, and the Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries
Balance of trade: a situation in which nations of the world have roughly equal power.
Triangle Trade: term that describes the Atlantic trade routes between three different destinations, or countries, in Colonial Times. The Triangular Trade routes, covered England, Europe, Africa, the Americas and the West Indies. The West Indies supplied slaves, sugar, molasses and fruits to the American colonies
Middle Passage: the stage of the triangular trade in which millions of Africans were forcibly transported to the New World as part of the Atlantic slave trade

Encomienda System? Natives farmed and mined for Spanish settlers for almost no pay in exchange for protections. Many were worked to death
How did the encomienda system affect native society? It created a class system in which natives were considered inferior to Europeans. It led to the deaths of more natives in worker revolts and during migrations. It meant that native farmers could only raise crops for food, not for cash

April 13th: Welcome back to class World History Golden Hawks! It is great to be back to class! While your schedule says our class meets at 8:30 Monday and Wednesday we do not actually meet as a class. I will have class stuff posted for you to do. We will meet on Google Meets from 1:00-2:00 Monday and Wednesday. At these meetings they are there for your convenience, they are not mandatory. We all realize that not all students may be able to meet at a specific time. We will be sharing our meetings with Ms. North’s class so it will be a great big meeting!
Today you will need your Renaissance and Reformation packet and then on Wednesday you will need your Age of Exploration notes. Today you will watch a video about the reformation and the 30 Year War. You do not have notes for the Thirty Years War so you will need to take your own because your assignment is over it. There is a link to a text book chapter, you can open it on your Google Drive, and then you have an assignment to complete by Friday. You will need to watch the Video about the Thirty Years War and the treaty that ends this war then read over seven documents. After you have read the document state whether or not you believe this document demonstrates an example of a political or religious cause for this war. You will state which one then write at least one sentence from the document that supports what you believe. At the end you will write a paragraph about what you think using at least two documents and two quotes that support your opinion. The Word document you can download from the resource section or just copy and paste it from the announcement below and use to answer these documents and write you response. The Questions you need to answer in your paragraph is: Was the Thirty-Year War fought primarily for political or religious reasons?
