1. If you are most comfortable typing in a Google Doc, you will want to choose the paste option for submitting. Some districts which have issued devices block downloads/conversions of Google Docs for attachment purposes.
2. You have a limited time to enter your info at the beginning before the exam question appears. Have handy your 8-character AP ID and email address which you use for MyAP.
3. If you choose copy/paste, some of the formatting does not seem to transfer such as indentations for new paragraphs. Instead, double space to show paragraph breaks. Once you paste into the provided text box, you can't edit your response and have to click on "clear field," revise on your original, and re-paste.
4. You can complete the demo as many times as you need to do so, and I highly recommend that teachers and students try it.
5. If you choose the photo upload or attachment upload, prepare your paper/doc before exam day. For photos, you should write your AP ID, initials, and page numbers at the top of at least 5 pages of paper (I'm encouraging my students to write in black ink). For attachments, set up a header with your AP ID and initials on a doc and then save the doc so that it's ready to go.
We discourage students from taking the test on a mobile device but if you do here is some information:
Taking the test on an iPhone: College Board does not accept HEIC format but all iPhone are defaulted to HEIC. If you plan on submitting a photo do this so you don’t have to make up the test in June.
Don't forget to hit SUBMIT at the end of the exam and to watch your time

Assignments: Complete Practice FRQ, Complete Unit 5 Vocab Quiz, Complete Video assignments (Pick Two and Guns, Germs and Steel) Take Practice Multiple Choice Quiz in Unit 5 section, watch Unit Review Videos (any of them, get this information in your head, watch them over and over, there are a lot of Unit review videos some long some short. I would pay close attention to the ones posted by AP College Board, Repetition is important.
ALSO, work on MAPS, the exam assumes you know your maps and more than likely you will have to identify and discuss counties. Remember we never got to Africa and Asia in our quizzes and they are two very important continents. There are lots of blank maps you can google so I urge you to print some off and practice if you can, maybe learn one section at a time.
April 28th Hi Golden Hawks: Make sure you are reading about Unit 5 Agriculture, look to your online text, condensed versions of information in the 5 steps to a 5 reading in Unit 5 as well. I have posted a reading on von Thunen in Unit 5 too, it is important to understand models. Hopefully to tried the vocabulary quiz to this unit and I will post a practice Unit 5 Quiz too.
Assignment this week is to read and turn in your two video assignments, Pick two and Guns, Germs and Steele Questions. Your pick Two responses should be answered in complete sentences with good summaries.
Complete your Agriculture Packet, read the text about agriculture too and add any notes to your own.
On your own try the below FRQ on Agriculture, It is important the you try these, I will post the response later this week along with an additional Practice FRQ
A quick FRQ writing advice: WRITING YOUR RESPONSES:
1. Is your answer something you could have written on the first day of school or without having taken AP HUG? If so, it’s not going to earn credit. Your answer must PROVE you learned things to the extent that you actually deserve college credit. For example, when asked to explain why refugees fled Syria, Afghanistan, or Iraq, a lot of you might be tempted to write “They flee because of war. They’re afraid for their lives.” Ummm, couldn’t you have written then in 7th grade? Why would that earn credit? Spoiler alert: it won’t.
Short but on topic Agriculture FRQ:
In the earl twenty first century, food security is an increasingly important issue in the developed countries, some neighborhoods in the United States cities have been characterized as food deserts. Food deserts are areas with little or no access to healthy and affordable food or limited or no access to fresh fruits and vegetables

If you are interested in the livestream the link is in this post. I hope everyone is doing well during these crazy times.
You just have to watch the video. At the start of the video I will display a code for students to type in on their phone or computer. If students are late they still can join in on the fun, the code will be left up on the screen so anyone can get in

April 18th Saturday: Hey There Golden Hawks!
AP Exam Study aids: there is a GREAT and super helpful document in the resource section called preparing for the FRQ and it is Super Helpful!!! ALSO, College Board just posted a great exam Power Point in the resource section.
There will be a great student webinar held on May 6th at (maybe 3:00 but not firm) held by I score 5, that I think would be a great thing to sit in on! So put this on your calendar! I will post more information on this as it comes to me
Class Info: If you still need to turn in One Pagers, Note Packets or take a test then I urge you to make them up next week before third quarter grades are finalized. Missed tests will be in FRQ format, taken during a google meet and timed.
Engagement in class is recorded and info given to all coaches
Unit 4 Information: AP College Board posted a great summary video for Unit 4 Part 1!!!! Please Watch it!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV8-cbNdGJM&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR2JDVcCT8rmcnNzFeIa3ZeQAinMeOuxn8kKdtdssvI48ekwyeaInZanC50
April 17th Friday Hey Golden Hawks there is a GREAT and super helpful document in the resource section called preparing for the FRQ and it is Super Helpful!!! ALSO, College Board just posted a great exam Power Point that I just put in the resource section.
Make sure you have all responded to the AP College Board email to you. They need to know who and who is not planning on taking the AP Exam.
FYI: Most HSHS coaches of most sports expect you to be logging in and participating in class. Logs are being kept by teachers as to what students are doing this and all coaches (rosters have been sent to teachers) will be notified weekly.
* Assignment: Please finish up your notes this weekend because we start Unit 5 Agriculture on Monday! I will be posting an assignment for that as well
* There will be a great student webinar held on May 6th at (maybe 3:00 but not firm) held by I score 5, that I think would be a great thing to sit in on! So put this on your calendar! I will post more information on this as it comes to me
* The Key to the Practice FRQ#1 is posted in Unit 4. I will post a second one later today to practice over the weekend.
* I will be updating Power Schools today and scoring the FRQ's that were turned into me this week.
If you still need to turn in One Pagers, Note Packets or take a test then I urge you to make them up next week before third quarter grades are finalized.
* I will post another Teacher Video on Devolution this weekend
* I will be checking emails throughout the day if you have any questions
* Great question that came in was "What is the difference between devolution and balkanization?
Answer: Devolution is the movement of power from the central government to regional governments within the state while balkanization is the breakup of a large state into several independent ones which would be an extreme form of devolution
There will be a focus on three main terms for your FRQ's in May: explain, describe and compare. Doubt there will be any identify or define on the test. From what I hear, you will not have 7 responses per FRQ, probably more like three maybe 4, but no questions that you can easily look up, so while you can have notes out for the exam it is doubtful you will have time to use them and have time to write your response.
* Verification of the College Board account: Students need to log into the My AP Classroom account to see what email address is listed and make sure they can access it. They should have already gotten an email from the College Board to confirm their test.
If a student did not join the AP Classroom and sign up for the test before we left school, they will not be able to test this year
April 16th Part B: Hi everyone, I had some questions during today's google meets about email verification with College Board so I asked the wonderful Mrs. Young and here is her response: They need to log into the My AP Classroom account to see what email address is listed and make sure they can access it. They should have already gotten an email from the College Board to confirm their test.
If they did not join the AP Classroom and sign up for the test before we left school, they will not be able to test this year.

April 11th Hi Golden Hawks Here are some strategies from 5 Steps to a 5 on writing FRQ's. Read over it, I will start posting sample FRQ's later today, give them a try, see how you do.
The free-response questions are not formal essays! You will not be expected to write a thesis statement, body, and conclusion. In fact, if you do, you probably will not have time to analyze all three questions and write good responses! You will not be given points for any pictures, diagrams, or maps you draw so only do so if you need to lay your facts out in order to write a good response. Make a quick outline if it helps you organize your thoughts for the essay. However, information written in the outline will not earn you points either. Only what is written in your actual essay will earn points.
The questions are usually based on stimulus material that could include a map, chart, graph, photograph, or other spatial display of data. Most questions are three-part and require you to analyze, interrelate, and synthesize concepts and knowledge from multiple areas of human geography in your responses.
STRATEGY
The following tips will help you do your best on the free-response essay questions of Section II. Some are Dos and some are Don’ts. Follow them carefully as 10 years of experience writing and scoring AP Human Geography free-response questions have gone into formulating them—and they work! Follow these recommendations and you will have a strategy for success.
Example, one point out of a possible two-point answer: Revitalization of the residential district of US cities stimulates the increase of a population engaged in economic activities.
Example, two points out of a possible two-point answer: Revitalization of the residential district of US cities stimulates the increase of a population engaged in economic activities. The chance of increased market activity in the business sectors of cities promotes improvement of the landscape to attract more consumers. Tourism is an important incentive to revitalize the central city where tourists will be attracted and improve the economy.

It will be two FRQ’s one at 25 minutes with 5 minutes to upload questions and one at 15 minutes with 5 minutes to upload. I am working on getting you access to an online text book, so stay tuned on that.
I will be posting more class information throughout next week. I will be holding google meets as well. You can always email me questions and I will respond hopefully within 24 hours.
Let’s meet today at 2:00 on Google meets, I will post a code for that shortly before 2:00 here on announcements. I will have additional meets next week and regular ones the week we come back for official classes the week of April 13th.
March 31st Hi Golden Hawks, Today's announcements: the Unit 4 Power Point has been updated. I will be posting our class time and my office hours tomorrow. If you have missing assignments please turn them in to me so they can be graded, if you have missing tests or quizzes I will try to give you options for those as soon as I come up with them., except for map quizzes. If you have not been following my announcements please go back and review them. Remember there is a text and videos that go with each unit and it is expected that you would be watching and reading those then putting in added information into your notes.
March 30th 2nd Announcement for today: Please watch the AP College Board Video 6.1 on the Origins and Influence of Urbanization. While this video is over Unit 6 most of it ties to past units and the instructor explains these tie ends along with posting a great FRQ at the end. It covers Patterns, Site and Situation, Migration, Population, Government policies that help create cities, Globalization, which is an on growing theme throughout AP HUGE along with the use of graphs and charts. Use this video as a great review of some past information and see if you can answer the FRQ, except for the Market Gardening part since that comes from Unit 5 on agriculture. The sample FRQ demonstrates just how FRQ’s can cover multiple units. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2F5Vrw8f40&feature=youtu.be
March 30th, Hi All you Golden Hawks! I miss you all! Here are a few brief announcements, I will probably be making more today.
FYI: For those of you who are trying to get to your WCPSS student email through Gmail - this doesn't work. The majority of you can get into their Wake ID portal just fine - you just need to know that you need to click on the Outlook icon and it takes you in.
So, In Summary - you can get into your Wake ID, then you have access to their student email - you just have to go through Wake ID and not Gmail
YES, I know I have your Unit 3 Guided Notes, no I do not know how or even if I can, to get this back to you yet.
March 27th Hi Golden Hawks. Please answer the Wake County / Holly Springs Technology Needs Survey. Please go the the Holly Springs HS web site or follow my link. It will save the staff a phone call home if you could fill this out. Thanks

AP 2020 Exam Demo Please Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keoYT1sQD7s&fbclid=IwAR2IAMHu0eDUG1yljd4ZRjiDFsPS_SL8QvM6ObQm6CKhIO1PFwXK_g2EEuY
- Go to your iPhone settings and click on camera
- Click on Formats and go to Camera Capture
- Make sure that the blue check mark is next to most Compatible (JPEG) not high efficiency

- Describe what kinds of information geographers use to map food deserts
- Identify and explain TWO reasons that food deserts exist in urban areas within developed countries
- Identify and explain ONE impact of living in a food desert

We wait for further directions from the state. With that said, should we resume classes in May things will change. I will be posting information, videos, practice FRQ's etc. for you since most of you look like you plan on taking the exam in May.
Can I email you all when I post announcements: If you look back you can see that I post information for you on most days so please just click on this site once a day. I would rather not email you all every day.

- Really read the question. Find the verb (key word asking for action). This will tell you where the points are in the question. Power verbs ask you to perform a very specific action when writing your essay. Below are a list of verbs and an explanation of what they require you to do for the essay. Get to know these verbs and exactly what you are being asked to do when you see them!
- Analyze: Power verb! Find the relationship between two events, concepts, or parts. Tip-off word could be “why?” Write an explanation and a conclusion (or conclusions) based on solid evidence and/or a logical argument. Give details and specifics. You should write at least two informative sentences. Use as much AP Human Geography vocabulary as possible.
- Assess/Evaluate: Power verb! Discuss the value or merit of something. List the positive and negative traits of a statement, concept, etc. Talk about advantages and disadvantages. Be clear about the criteria, or standards, which you are using to judge or evaluate. Specific examples should be applied to the criteria to support your answer. Evaluation or assessment means you must make clear connections between your argument and the supporting evidence you give.
- Compare: Put the two statements, countries, concepts, ideas, etc. side-by-side and observe similarities and differences between them. Always note both similarities and differences! Be specific and remember, the more relevant information you write down, the better your chances of fitting the rubric and earning points.
- Contrast: Here you are asked to look for the differences between two concepts, ideas, countries, etc. You will need to look for ways in which they are not the same and write these in detail.
- Describe: Power verb! You will need to tell about something or give a picture in words. Write lots of detail in at least two sentences. Talk about its most noteworthy characteristics. Tip-off word could be “what?”
- Discuss: Power verb! This verb is used a lot on AP Human Geography free-response questions. You are asked to debate or write about something taking both points of view. Write about the topic by presenting both sides. The question will usually give a relationship between two different phenomena or concepts. In your response, identify, describe, and/or explain and be sure and supply ample detail. Discussion requires at least three sentences. Remember, if you discuss vacation plans with your parents, you talk for more than a minute and you cover lots of details. That is what you need to do here.
- Explain: Another power verb! This is another verb you will likely see on the AP Human Geography exam. Here you are asked to make something plain and to use lots of details. Talk about the logical connections between the geographic phenomena in the question. Discuss the cause-and-effect relationships that exist. What is the meaning of this relationship? Use at least two sentences and preferably more to give good details as you describe them.
- Identify/Define: You are asked to write down a simple list of characteristics, factors, or give a definition. You do not need to write an explanation. Give a meaning for a word or concept. Always write a good example to ensure points are earned. You will see this verb a lot on the AP Human Geography free-response questions. Usually this part of the question is only worth one or two points, but every point helps! Sometimes it is combined with another verb that requires more thorough analysis as in the first example given below.
- Tip:
Example, one point out of a possible two-point answer: Revitalization of the residential district of US cities stimulates the increase of a population engaged in economic activities.
Example, two points out of a possible two-point answer: Revitalization of the residential district of US cities stimulates the increase of a population engaged in economic activities. The chance of increased market activity in the business sectors of cities promotes improvement of the landscape to attract more consumers. Tourism is an important incentive to revitalize the central city where tourists will be attracted and improve the economy.
- Save the fluff. Don’t write a lot of empty words about nothing. If you have absolutely no clue about the question being asked, find the geographic concept in the question and write a definition. Always stick with the topic, even if you cannot really answer the question. Use geographic vocabulary you learned in your class. Find some bit of geographic knowledge from your class and apply it somehow to the question. There is a chance that something in your definition or explanation will accidentally hit on the correct response and earn you a point or two, but please, do not waste your time saying the same thing over and over 10 different ways.
- Be a clock-watcher. You have 45 minutes to write two solid essays for the exam. Try to limit yourself to 20 minutes for each response and keep an eye on the clock. If you have extra time after writing all three essay responses, go back and review, edit, and make sure each part of every question was completely answered.
- Don’t skip a question. Attempt to answer all three free-response essay questions. It will be very difficult for you to do well on the exam if you completely skip just one of these essays! If you try and write something pertaining to the question, even if you do not score points, you will be given a zero and will be better off statistically when your total score is computed. If you leave an essay blank, you will receive a “—” score and it will be impossible for you to get a 4 or 5 score on the AP Human Geography exam.
- Tip:
- Don’t make a bulleted list. Bulleted or numbered lists will not be scored for points. While a formal essay is not required, lists of facts are not permitted, and you will not receive credit for any information that is not written in essay form!
- Limit examples to the number specified. If one example is asked for in the question, don’t write three or four examples. Only the first example will be read, or examined, for points. If two examples are required, only the first two will be analyzed for points. The reason for this rule is to encourage students to think of the best answer and not just write a list of possible guesses.
- Label each part of your response identifying the part of the question you are answering. For example, if you are answering Part B of the first essay, write “1B” at the beginning of the first paragraph for that part of your response. This helps the reader who is scoring your essay locate possible points. The reader can go right to the appropriate part of your response and easily check your answer against the rubric. If the reader has to search throughout your response for each bit of correct information, it greatly increases the chances that it will not be located.
- Never re-state the question in your essay. Don’t write an introductory paragraph or conclusion paragraph either. These actions waste valuable time and get you zero points. You will not be assessed points based on using good grammar, correct punctuation and spelling, and excellent essay structure, but you will not lose points for incorrect spelling and poor grammar either.
- Write large and legibly with pen only. Readers are not handwriting experts, but they do try very hard to read poor handwriting. Make sure you write large enough and as carefully as possible so that points are not missed because of messy, illegible handwriting.
- Double-space your essays. This will give you room to add a few details when you go back and re-read your responses. If you have left out an important detail or want to add a supporting fact, you can easily add it in the extra space over or under the sentence.
- Review your essays. Always go back over your essays and make sure that you have:
- Answered each part of each essay completely. Remember, answer each part of each question with at least two meaningful sentences that directly answer the question.
- Lettered each part of each essay clearly to correspond with the part of the question you are answering.
- Put the essay number in the small box in the corner of each page of the answer booklet.
- Referred to the correct region and/or time period referenced in the question.
- Added specific examples and “for instances” to add more substance and support to your responses.
